A beach resort with an atmosphere of highlands


Punta del Este, denoting an eastern point in Spanish, is a resort city located about 134 km east of Montevideo. Many tourists, not only Uruguayans, but also those from surrounding countries such as Argentine and Brazil, visit here on holiday during a high season between November and March, seeking an endlessly long beach, roadside trees looking like a forest, lawn-carpeted parks and clear sea water.

Major Tourist Spots

Punta del Este is one of the eminent resorts in South America. It is on a cape on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean and The River Plate. The waters on the east side along The River Plate, is calm and quiet. However, the opposite goes for the other side, that of the Atlantic Ocean, showing its rough waters.
In Punta del Este, you can see the sun rising from and setting into the sea owing to its extraordinary geographic setting. This city of beautiful sunrises and spectacular evening sunsets attracts local and foreign celebrities to visit here for holiday.
The summer time from December to March is a season for marine sports such as yacht, motorboat, surfing, water-skiing, diving and kite, while year-round sports include golf, tennis, football and polo. From winter through spring between July and November, whales may catch your eyes, which migrate to north escaping from cold water in the Antarctic.

In Punta Ballena, near Punta del Este, Thera is the Casa Pueblo Museum. This museum displays a work of the renowned artist Paez Vilaro.
