This is one of the world’s largest dams jointly constructed by Paraguay and Brazil. The construction started in 1975 and was completed in 1991. It is 196 m in height; the maximum head is 95 m; the total length is 8 km; and the total water storage is 29 billion cubic meters. The total number of generating units on both the Paraguayan and Brazilian sides is 18, each of which has the power of about as big as 700 MW.
For tourists, there is a package tour shared by Paraguay and Brazil. On the tour, you can appreciate an audio-visual documentation of the dam construction, and a special bus takes you to the generating units and to the observatory from which you have a high angle view of the dam.
It is located 14 km upstream of the Friendship Bridge by which you can cross to Foz do Iguassu in Brazil.

Recommended Tour Courses
There are three kinds of courses.
Sightseeing Course
A visit to facilities outside of the Itaipu Power Plant. It takes 1.5 hours, with specific departure schedules.
Special Course
The tour visits both outside and inside facilities. Maximum number of persons to a group is 12, and you have to be at least 12 years old. A reservation is required for this tour, which lasts 2 hours.
Technical Course
For specialists and honored guests with special invitations. The tour is for 2.5 hours.
