The Lacerda痴 Elevator

This is the capital of the State of Bahia and is located along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. It used to be the first capital of Brazil.
The traditional historical culture and ordinary people痴 culture; nature痴 beauty; and mixed religious cultures - all these have made Salvador a legendary city.
The rugged terrain of mountains, valleys and plains divide this place into an upper city and a lower city. A public giant elevator (Lacerda痴 Elevator (Elevador Lacerda)) connects the two areas.

Squares of Pelourinho

The Historical Center (Centro) has the biggest number of baroque-style buildings in the American Continent. It was designated as a World Cultural Heritage of UNESCO in 1985. There are 600 restored and preserved buildings.
A number of mansions from the 16-18th centuries remain here. Moreover, Municipal Square, S Square, Lacerda痴 Elevator, City Hall, Rio Branco Palace, Misericordia Hospital and Church, the Archbishop痴 Palace, Basilica Cathedral, the Terreiro de Jesus Square, Largo do Cruzeiro de S縊 Francisco are here.

Buildings from the colonial era stand facing the stone-paved plaza.

Mercado Modelo (MERCADO MODELO)
The largest folk craft shop in Salvador City is near the Lacerda痴 Elevator.
The first floor is a folk craft shop and the second floor痴 terrace is a restaurant where you can savor the local cuisine and watch the capoeira show (martial arts dance).


Basilica Cathedral (CATEDRAL BASILICA)
It is a beautiful cathedral built in the 17th century. Its blended baroque and rococo style is splendid.
Materials such as gold, marble, jacaranda tree, and turtle shell are used for its interior decoration.


Saint Francis Church and Convent
(IGREJA E CONVENTO DE SテO FRANCISCO)

It was constructed by the Franciscan priests at the beginning of the 18th century (1708). This church has one of the greatest baroque expressions in Brazil. Tile panelling illustrate Saint Francis life and his renunciation of material goods.


Santo Antonio da Barra Fort
(FORTE DE SANTO ANTONIO DA BARRA)

It is the oldest fort in Brazil that sits at the tip of a small cape in Todos os Santos Bay (Baia de Todos os Santos).
This fort belongs to the Brazilian Navy. It is open to the public as Bahia Nautical Museum.


UFBA Sacred Art Museum
(MUSEU DE ARTE SACRA DA UFBA)

Inaugurated in August 10, 1959, it is located at the Santa Tereza Convent and is one of the most amazing architectonic complexes from the 17th century. Sculptures made of wood, soap stone, clay, and ivory are exhibited here. Among other things, one can find a splendid silver vessel, adorned with more than 400 gems and semi-precious stones.

Saint Francis Church and Convent

Itaparica Island (ISLA ITAPARICA)
An island surrounded by a beautiful coastline in Salvador City. It takes approximately 30-90 minutes by ferry or motorboat (depending on the kind of boat).


Costa do Sauipe Resort (COSTA DO SAUIPE)
It is located 110 km from the center of Salvador City and 76 km from the airport.
There are five foreign-affiliated hotels, homey pension houses, leisure and sport facilities. Moreover, there is an 18-hole full-fledged golf course. You can also enjoy a variety of water sport such as boating, canoeing, rafting and windsurfing. There are horseback riding courses and facilities, too.

Praia do Forte Beach(PRAIA DO FORTE)
You can observe an enormous sea turtle emerging from the sea, moving on the sand, preparing its nest and laying eggs.
When hatched, baby turtles creep out of the eggs buried in the sands, and try real hard to run towards the sea to survive.

Here, sea turtles are protected by the Sea Turtle Preservation Project (Proyecto TAMAR ) developed by the Brazilian Government and supported by scientific institutions and private entities. The project headquarters is on the beach.

Climate: The temperature is high throughout the year. It rains a lot in July and August. It is a typical hot and humid tropical city. Being between Capricorn and the equator, the average temperature is 25 degrees, and it rarely changes. It is a world famous city where the sun always shines.
