Iguassu Falls

Iguassu Falls is in the westernmost part of the State of Parana where the border between Brazil and Argentina meet. It is a huge cataract composed of big and small flowing falls.
There are 275 waterfalls descending from a height of 70 m. It displays the magnificence and beauty of nature.
These falls, including the national parks stretching around the cataract, is designated as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site.


Main Attractions

Iguassu Falls (FOZ DO IGUACU)
Iguassu means “Big Water” in Guarani, the native’s language. As the word suggests, it is composed of 275 big and small waterfalls, falling from a height of 70 m. Iguassu Falls is found where the borders of Brazil and Argentina meet, thus, you can see it from both sides. Since most of the waterfalls face the Brazilian side, this side is ideal for looking at the falls as a whole.
The most awesome point is called “The Devil’s Throat.” Experience the power of the waterfalls from a close distance in the observatory.

Iguassu National Park (PARQUE NACIONAL DO IGUACU)
This park, including the Iguassu Falls, is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The park is where various plants and animals live. There are approximately 350 kinds of birds, 250 types of butterflies and 50 kinds of mammals. Some animals living in this unparalleled jungle are endangered species.

Macuco Safari (SALTO DO MACUCO)
It is a popular package tour where you can appreciate flora and fauna while going around the Iguassu National Park riding in an open jeep and on foot. Afterwards, you take a rubber dinghy to have a closer view of “The Devil’s Throat.”

Helicopter Tour (PASSEIO DE HELICOPTERO)
It is sightseeing in the Iguassu National Park using a helicopter. It is best for enjoying the entire view of the huge cataract.
In addition, there is another tour that takes you above the Itaipu Power Plant, too.


Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant (USINA HIDRELETRICA DE ITAIPU)
It is located in the Parana River at the border between Brazil and Paraguay. This hydroelectric power plant is owned by both countries.
It is the world’s largest hydropower plant powered with 18 turbines. The power generation capacity is 12.6 million kW.
According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, it is one of the seven largest structures of the modern world.

Access: By plane:
Regular flights are available from Foz do Iguassu International Airport (Aeroporto Internacional de Foz do Iguacu).

By bus:
Bus transportation is also available from all of the important cities in the country.
There are also bus services from Puerto Iguazu City in Argentina and from Ciudad del Este City in Paraguay. It takes about 30 minutes from Puerto Iguazu City and about an hour from Ciudad del Este City.
Season: May-October (winter) is recommended.

Various types of hotels are available around Iguassu Falls.
Resort hotels and large hotels are concentrated along the street between Foz do Iguassu City and the Falls. More reasonably-priced hotels can be found in the city.
