Fernando de Noronha Islands

Fernando de Noronha Islands, a beautiful archipelago of the Brazilian Atlantic Islands, is registered as a World Heritage Site of UNESCO. The small islands formed by volcanic rocks make for a breathtaking coastline in Brazil.

In particular, Fernando de Noronha Islands is the biggest island. The landscape surrounded by natural beauty is breathtaking. It is even called a “paradise.”


Main Attractions

Fernando de Noronha Island (ILHAS DE FERNANDO DE NORONHA)
It is the biggest among 21 islands. The area is about 17 km².
A part of the main island (about 8 km²) was designated as an environmental protection area (Area de Protecao Ambiental = APA) in 1988. It has become the National Marine Park (Parque Nacional Marinho de Fernando de Noronha).


Rocas Island (ATOL DAS ROCAS)
It is the second largest island following the Fernando de Noronha Island with an area of 6.8 km².


Flora and Fauna Appreciation
Typical plant systems of the dry Brazilian northeast region are found in the greater parts of Fernando de Noronha Islands. Generally, the highlands are covered by forests and the plains are mainly covered with shrubs.
Moreover, the sea around the islands is blessed with abundant fish, the poriferan, seaweeds, shellfish, corals and such. There are many natural pools in each island where you can appreciate various exotic marine animals.


National Marine Park of Fernando de Noronha
(PARQUE NACIONAL MARINHO DE FERNANDO DE NORONHA)

It is a national park with a total area of 112.7 km² and a circumference of 60 km.
It was selected to preserve animals, plants and other natural resources, by protecting the resources that represent the ecosystem of the land and the ocean.


Beaches
The features of Fernando de Noronha Islands are its turquoise blue and transparent water, not to mention the shore reefs of interesting shapes. Leao Beach (Praia do Leao), Sancho Bay (Baia do Sancho), and Porcos Bay (Baia dos Porcos) are breathtaking and recommended.


Activities

Diving
It is the ideal way to appreciate the marine life of Fernando de Noronha Islands. You can see as far as up to 50 m in the water where clarity is high. In the coast of Atalia and Baia dos Porcos Bay, you can appreciate the colorful fish.
The diving area is wide, with depths between 8 m and 60 m depending on your skill level. You can see various fishes, poriferan, rays, sea turtles and sharks swimming around the shore reefs, coral reefs and the sunken ships.

Rental services for vehicles, boats, equipment and the like are available at local diving shops.
Beach


Sightseeing Boat (PASSEIO DE BARCO)
It is a popular activity where you can simply enjoy nature and the scenery of Fernando de Noronha Islands.
You can take pleasure from the superb view of the beach and peripheral islands.


Dolphins Observation (OBSERVACAO DE GOLFINHOS)
Dolphins Bay (Baia dos Golfinhos) is known as dolphin habitat. As its name suggests, groups of dolphins can be seen from the observatory. The best time to observe them is early morning when dolphins are most active.

Location: It is 345 km to the northeast from Cabo de Sao Roque Cape in the State of Rio Grande do Norte.
350 km from Natal City, the state capital.
540 km from Recife City, the capital of the State of Pernanbuco.
Access: Two flights are available daily from Gurarapes International Airport (Aeroporto dos Gurarapes) in Recife City and Augusto Severo Airport (Aeroporto Internacional Augusto Severo) in Natal City.
Season: The dry season is from September to March. The rainy season is from April to August.
Climate:

Tropical climate. Every year, there is a defined rainy season (April-August) and dry season (September-March). The amount of rainfall is significant in April-July. It sometimes reaches 193.5 mm a day. In October, the amount of rainfall is much less - 9 mm or less a day.
The average annual temperature is 25 degrees with a differential range of 4 degrees. The hottest time is from January to March.

-Accommodations-
In the main island, there are plenty of bed-and-breakfast accommodations made from remodeled residences of the locals. They are plain and simple but provided with air conditioners and room telephones. Some are with a swimming pool, too.
