Humahuaca Valley (QUEBRADA DE HUMAHUACA)
Humahuaca Valley

The valley lies on the Province of Jujuy (Provincia de Jujuy), northwest of Argentina, bordered on the north by the Republic of Bolivia and on the west by the Republic of Chile. On its east and south is the Province of Salta.

Province of Jujuy is divided into four districts: QUEBRADA, LA PUNA, LAS YUNGAS, and VALLES. Each of them has its own tourist attractions.

[Quebrada District]
[La Puna District]
[Valles District]
[Las Yungas District]

[QUEBRADA District]

Main Attractions

Quebrada de Humahuaca (QUEBRADA DE HUMAHUACA)
The Valley is registered as a World Natural and Cultural Heritage Site.
At the foot of the valley lie the towns of Tumbaya, Purmamarca, Posta de Hornillos, Maimara, Tilcara, Huacalera, Uquia, and Humahuaca. Its most famous tourist spot is the “Seven- Color Mount (Cerro de los Siete Colores)” of Purmamarca, 65 km away from San Salvador de Jujuy, the capital of the Province.
As the name suggests, the sight is breathtaking: a mountain with faults in pastel colors treats the eyes. There are paths made for trekking.

A thanksgiving carnival dedicated to the “PACHAMAMA (Mother Earth)” is held for one whole month in August. People from the northwest like Jujuy, Salta, and Tucuman keep tradition alive by showing respect to “Pachamama.”

Purmamarca (Pueblo de la Tierra Virgen), the name of the town, means “the Town of the Virgin Lands.” It is very attractive, with its houses backdropped by the multi-hued mountainside, due to the minerals exposed from within.
The town has picturesque sceneries with each village exhibiting its own palette. The generations-old tranquil scenery is impressive.

Humahuaca (HUMAHUACA)
Located at 2,939 m above sea level, it is the biggest city in the Humahuaca Valley, with a long network of stone pavements.
A weird local legend goes that a buried head in the graveyard cried, “Humahuacac, Humahuacac. ” Thus is the origin of the city’s name. You can come here from San Salvador City in Province of Jujuy, up over the plateau, through the villages of Purmamarca, Maimara, and Tilcara, at the same time enjoying the colorful view of the mountains.
Houses are built with bricks of sun-dried mud. There are historical churches and more significantly, the prehistoric Pulcura de Tilcara Ruins, etc.

Tilcara (TILCARA)
It is a small village established in 1586 and located 2,461 m above sea level.
It means “a region where the Tilcara tribe lives (la tribu que habitaba la zona).”

In Pucara, 2 km away from Tilcara, they say that ruins of native people’s houses and fortresses that prevented the intruders were found. A lot of cacti grow around the area, which make the ruins look as if they are being protected by the cacti.

[LA PUNA District]

There is an old road in Inca used long ago when the Inca Empire reigned and prospered. Salt farms are spread throughout the vicinity. La Quiaca, a village by the border of Bolivia, is the most important village of all in the plateau (Vasta Planicie).
It is a region in the Province of Jujuy where the altitude is high, with lots of sunshine and very warm during the day with sharp temperature drops at night; the temperature fluctuates considerably, and it is very dry.

Since there are no gas stations in all the towns of La Puna District, it is necessary to calculate your fuel supply by noting into account all the refueling points.

Main Attractions

Salt Pan (SALINAS GRANDES)
Upon getting to the National Route No. 52 located at the boundary between Province of Salta and Province of Jujuy, you can see a vast stretch of salt farms of more than 525 km2. The average altitude is 3,350 m above sea level, and at one point it rises to as high as 4,320 m.

It was designated as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1976. More than 50,000 flamingoes live here. Its altitude is 4,320 m above sea level, a land area of 15,000 hectares.

[VALLES District]

It is the where San Salvador de Jujuy, the capital of the province, and an airport are located.
It has a considerably moderate climate, with lots of hot springs, and a thickly forested area.

Main Attractions

San Salvador de Jujuy (SAN SALVADOR DE JUJUY)
The capital of Province of Jujuy.
Here you can find the old City Council, the cathedral (La Catedral), and the Provincial Capitol fronting the Central Square.
A lot of historical buildings still stand. Santa Barbara Church (la Capilla de Santa Barbara), the oldest church, still uses tiles on the roof, and wooden beams.
Juan Galo Lavalle (Juan Galo Lavalle), the Provincial Historical Museum and Provincial Archaeological Museum have very interesting exhibits.

Reyes Hot Spring (TERMAS DE REYES)
It is a row of hot springs that stretches up to the Reyes Valley, 19 km from San Salvador de Jujuy.

[LAS YUNGAS District]

It was designated as a Biosphere Reserve of UNESCO in 2002. The altitude is comparatively lower than other places in Jujuy. It is located east of the province, with abundant flora and fauna, and a subtropical forest area.
It has a temperate climate, but turns humid, with much precipitation, especially in summer.
